Background

The Zoroastrian Association of Western Australia Inc., was formed by the Zoroastrians of Western Australia, in the year 1997 (1367 Y.Z.).

The first elected ZAWA committee was headed by Ervad. Darius Pavri as Chairperson, Mr. Farhad Mehta as Vice Chairperson, Mr. Firoz Pestonji as Secretary, Mr. Mehernosh Buhariwalla as Treasurer. Ms. Purveen Meher Homji, Mr. Homee Wadia & Mr. Behram Cooper were elected as committee members.

Incorporation of ZAWA

ZAWA was formally incorporated in October 1997, with the persistant effort put in by Darius Pavri, Dinyar Marfatia, Farhad Mehta and Rostam Chami, and has since come to be known as ZAWA Inc.


Aims & Objects

The main objects of ZAWA Inc. are:

  • To advance religious and cultural knowledge of the Zoroastrian religion and faith among the Zoroastrians that have settled in Western Australia.
  • To be a religious, non-political, non-sectarian and cultural organisation.
  • To conduct various religious activities including Jashans (thanksgiving), Gahambars (religious feasts), Navjotes (initiations), marriage and death ceremonies and similar religious activities.
  • To provide the Zoroastrians of Western Australia with a place of worship and cultural facilities.
  • To conduct periodical religious schools to enable Zoroastrian children and others to acquire a knowledge of Zoroastrian concepts, history, literature and arts in all its forms. To promote the teaching of Avesta, Pahalvi, Persian, Gujarati and other languages related to the religious faith.
  • To provide a library of religious books and scriptures of Zoroastrian religion.
  • To promote better relations among members of the Zoroastrian community by providing assistance, religious and social counselling and hospitality to its members as and when the need arises.
  • To render assistance to Zoroastrians who settle in Western Australia and give such advise as required to enable humanitarian assistance to them.
  • To maintain contact with Zoroastrian Associations throughout the world.
  • To contribute to charitable causes in Australia and overseas as may from time to time be determined by the Committee in accordance with the principles of the Zoroastrian faith.

Newsletter

ZAWA issues a quarterly newsletter, which was named "The ZAWA Chronicle". This newsletter contains local Zoroastrian news, Zoroastrian religious articles, ZAWA activities, fun stuff for the kids and miscellaneous articles provided by the community. ZAWA is constantly on the lookout for interesting contributions to The ZAWA Chronicle.

The ZAWA Website

ZAWA website was created by Behram Cooper. The approach to the website is kept simplistic, user-friendly and devoid of gimmicks, gizmos or complicated graphics, so as to facilitate quick downloading time.


The ZAWA Logo

The ZAWA logo was also designed by Behram. It depicts ATASH (the holy fire) and the sky surrounding it, with earthly green in the lower part of the outer ring and the fiery glow in the top part.
